Abstract

Indonesia is home to a wide variety of culture and traditions, local culture finds itself merged with incoming foreign culture; thus forming acculturation. Sesajen is one of such acculturation of Hindu and Islam culture. This culture becomes the identity of local communities, protecting local wisdom of all systems of life. However, this often contrasts with modern Islam culture which reflects the Holy Al-Qur'an and Al-Hadith; the commonfolks are often unaware of the meaning and values in Sesajen. This research aims to: 1) analyze Sesajen culture, 2) describe Sesajen as an identity, 3) analyze Sesajen as an acculturation of culture, 4) discover a preservation model as a locla wisdom. The implemented method is descriptive method of the qualitative approach. Data is gathered through instruments of participatory observation, field notes and in-depth interview. The observation is conducted on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Participatory observation starts at 18.00, while the in-depth interview is conducted a number of times with elders, youth and figures of religion. The field notes are collected at 16.00. This research finds that 1) Sesajen starts to fade as age advances, no longer being of the youths' interest, 2) Sesajen is shown very simple by coffee wrappings, rujak, tobacco, flame, etc., 3) the preservation model involves passing down Sesajen to the next generation. In conclusion, Sesajen performs dual-function roles: giving meaning in social life, and becoming an identity of culture as well as local wisdom of the community; this can only be achieved through active participation of all elements as well as their respective families.
