Abstract

In adaptation processed by Papuan students, there are several obstacles ranging from different languages to stereotypes they get. The identity crisis experienced by Papuan students has hampered the process of adaptation. Therefore, research was conducted on the basis of finding out on adaptation strategies of Papuan students when they are studying at Sebelas Maret University. In this study, the researchers analyzed adaptation strategies of Papuan students by using subsistence ethics, by James C. Scott. This study using a qualitative method. Using analytical descriptive approach, this paper will describes about particular event based on facts that appear as they should. Researchers use two types of data, primary and secondary data to answer the problems. Purposive sampling technique being chosen for selecting an informants from Papuan students who studying at Sebelas Maret University. Data collection has been done along with questions and answers in an nterviews. We were obtained interview transcript, then analyzed and tested the validity of the data using source triangulation. results of this study, describes are Papuan students have some strategies in overcoming barriers. The first strategy is a strategy of restraint, the second, an alternative strategy of subsistence, and the last is a strategy of building relationships, is where Papuan students try to build relationships with other students who are not from Papua. These three strategies are similar to those employed by the farming community in James C. Scott’s analysis.
